Find out more about Randy

I've been dancing since the mid-90s when I transitioned from Country to Salsa. I took time off from the scene during my marriage, so my view of what is happening now is fresh, and untainted by various schools of thought that were introduced to the SD scene in the past years. Today, I am a performer for Alma Latina and have done multiple Congress events including San Diego, LA, San Francisco, Palm Springs, and Miami. My dance partner, Bianca Chapman and I have our own choreographies and have performed close to 20 times, including competitions in the US and Mexico. Most recently, we performed at the Miami Salsa Congress last week. Also, due to my work related travel, I've danced in New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas and have experienced first hand the regional varieties of salsa. I have an extensive contact network for salsa including salseros all over the states, Canada, UK, Europe, and India. Before committing to performing, I opened my own salsa club briefly as well. From an education persepctive, I've got my MBA from SDSU in Finance and my undergruate from UCLA. My professional career includes writing proposals to major retail companies as well as product collateral.

Salsa came to me by happenstance. I was doing couples dancing in Country (two step, swing) and was introduced to the energy provided by salsa by my roomate and never looked back. My family has always danced, so I grew up learning East Coast swing from my parents, who were products of the 1950s. I would consider myself a student of salsa, not only the dance, but the music and strive to understand the unique qualities of the various genres within salsa itself (Salsa Dura, Romantica, Latin Jazz). Its a serious hobby for me, not my profession.

Top Tips from the Best of San Diego Salsa

This article was made possible by contributions of San Diego's top salsa instructors.

The San Diego Salsa scene has several talented dance instructors.  We don’t see them out socially as much as we’d like as their services are high demand.  While in town, they work tirelessly in studio with their teams and private students - exhausted by day end making social dancing a chore.  They can often be found on airplanes, hotels and rental cars while they travel to teach or perform around the world.   As such, we often forget that this group represents some of our best social dancers. Each instructor is gifted with special talents; from technique, footwork, patterns and styling. The tips below were all provided by San Diego’s top dance instructors, organized for leads and follows, but read them all! Give these a try to improve your technique, timing and style.  A bonus tip for…

Salsa-lution San Diego: Part II

The Transition from Social Salsa to Team Sport  How did Salsa Become a Team Sport? If you were reading an article and saw the words “boot camp,” “stretching,” “skill drills,” “cross-training” and “recruiting” – you might think you were reading the pre-season College Football feature in the USA Today.   In fact, these activities are all part of the today’s era of “Team Salsa,” where all of these activities occur on a very different playing field.  Rather than gridirons, men and women meet in a variety of studios and clubs across San Diego County to practice technique and learn routines for performance or competition.  For many of us, Team Salsa offers the camaraderie, competitive spirit and sense of accomplishment we experienced growing up with a number of team sports. Today, San Diego supports fifteen (15) active teams of various levels and styles.  This concentration of teams in our small city rivals the…

Salsa-lution San Diego Part I

The first of a three part series discussing the evolution of Salsa in San Diego.

Hot Tub Time Machine: Salsa Style

Hollywood has had a lot of success with time-travel movies. “Blast from the Past,” starring Brandon Fraser (The Mummy, School Ties) features a teen who grows up in a nuclear shelter, coming up top after an absence of more than 10 years - and everything has changed including music, fashion, and technology. Imagine doing the reverse, going back in time, like in the recent comedy “Hot Tube Time Machine.” What would you do without texting, Facebook and the Internet? What would you do without LA Style On-1, New York On-2, or Bachata?

Believe it or not, Salsa has been in San Diego for some time now, before the teams, the performances, the club circuit and the socials existed. Things were different, but the people, the teachers…
