Stevens Steak House's: LA's Top Male Solo Salsa Competition 2011 ... Do not blame the venue; blame the judges.

LA'S TOP MALE SOLO SALSA COMPETITION — On Sunday, December 4th, 2011, those willing to compete against each other in order to prove that they are the Top Male Salsa Dancer in Los Angeles, went head to head at Steven's Steak House in the now highly acclaimed: Steven's Steak House LA's Top Male Solo Salsa Competition.

And then, after the winners were announced on both categories, pro and semi-pro, salsa dancers all over began voicing their deep displeasure with the results all over social networks within the court of public opinion. The problem is that while some understand that the culprits of the wildly disliked results were the judges, some opted to blame the venue and its ownership.

You who are doing that got it all wrong.

Do not blame the venue and its ownership. All the venue did was put an event together and sought to give out some prize money, while entertaining all of its patrons who love salsa dancing and music. Then, the venue put all its trust on selected professional judges that would do their job, objectively and without predujice, and select the most appropriate winners.

This is not the first time something like this has happened in Los Angeles, and it won't be the last. This hasn't just happened at Stevens Steak House, but in almost every Salsa venue in Los Angeles who ever organized a Salsa dance competition: the Mayan, Conga Room, Granada, Sportsmen's Lodge, Sachi, Monsoon, etc, etc, etc.

Sometimes, judges dislike certain competitors or favor others, and thus, give their points or take away points accordingly. Take it from someone who competed in Los Angeles and who was handed score cards of ALL competitors, and who noticed how directors of dance companies who judged the competition, gave couples in their dance teams higher scores and blew away other competitors who were sure threats to their preferred dancers. Oh, those days!

So, we all wanted Cristian Oviedo to win the pro division, and when you look at the videos, you can clearly tell that he should have won. But he didn't. And this is not the venue's fault, but the judges fault.

So, what's the solution to this problem? There's none.

Some of the same competitors who have been screwed in competitions, have sometimes been judges in other competitions and screwed other people as well, which creates a pattern where everyone is out to get each other at some point.

The only real possibility of changing this would be what the Mayan tried to do after they had their share of very unfair results when they held their World Salsa Competitions, which was, bring in judges who do not frequent salsa clubs, who are not related to salsa, who would not know the names or faces of those competing, and who are highly trained in DANCE, not just salsa.

This worked out pretty well for the Mayan, until they began, once again, allowing "guest judges" or "audience judges" to come in, but the selected such 'guest or audience' individuals clearly had a stake in the results of the competition. What I mean is that if you are a director of a dance company and you have a couple competing in semi-pro or pro, and if they win it is likely that your classes will go up and your income will increase, then you will certainly be more prone to giving your couple the prize money and title.

So, my only contention is that you should not blame the people organizing and promoting great events for the Los Angeles Salsa Community. Stevens, especially, has done a great job in their promotion and advancing of Salsa and Latin Dance in Los Angeles.

It is the very ownership of Stevens who has put some of the best Salsa dance events in Los Angeles in the last couple of years. They are king of the Battle of the Bands events, cater to dancers and promote live music, pretty much own every no-work-Monday Holiday dates, and have Salsa and Latin dancing almost every night of the week. Come on people, gain some perspective here!

But if you are upset, blame the judges and leave the venue alone.

Hello Milton, (PART 1)

First of all, I’d like to thank you for expressing YOUR point of view in regards of the unfairness of what took place last Sunday. Also just for the record, yes Stevens has been and still is one of the best spots for Salsa in L.A without a doubt.

However, since you provided YOUR point of view in defense of the venue and its promoters, I would like the chance to express MINE. It’s the beauty of this country of ours, free speech as long as… Read More
Hello Milton, (PART 1)

First of all, I’d like to thank you for expressing YOUR point of view in regards of the unfairness of what took place last Sunday. Also just for the record, yes Stevens has been and still is one of the best spots for Salsa in L.A without a doubt.

However, since you provided YOUR point of view in defense of the venue and its promoters, I would like the chance to express MINE. It’s the beauty of this country of ours, free speech as long as is educated and civilized.

I have to disagree with you on the fact that the venue, ownership and promoters are not to be blamed for the results and negligence in this matter. In MY PERSONAL opinion they are as guilty as the judges. Owner and promoters have the responsibility to make sure, that they select competent and qualified judges and that those judges are neutral and do not favor any specific individual or group. That these ”judges” are not best friends and/or business partners with the promoters themselves and they do not share mutual interests with a specific group competing in the competition, and last that they truly understand the rules and regulation set set and that there’s no doubt or questions about these rules.

Many may question, why the owner? He’s only hosting the event and granting the prize money. Well, in that case, it is in the owner’s best interest to FIRE these promoters for not doing their job, promoters that do not take extra steps to ensure a fair and clean competition. After all promoters come and go, but at the end is the venue and its ownership that it will end up losing bussiness because of the negligence of these “promoters”. People are fed up with these kinds of atrocities and will stop coming to this venue due to their negligence. (It’s already happening)
You are 100% right and I have to agree with you, this is not the first or the last time that this will happen, however venue owners and promoters all over need to be aware that people are not stupid and we are tired of the same crap all the time. In MY personal view, the promoters are as INCOMPETENT and NEGLIGENT as the judges they hired to judge the event.

Hello Milton, (PART 2)

C’mon a rematch? What is the point of it? Why don’t we have the whole competition all over again for both divisions? Clearly there were HUGE mistakes on both.
You as a former performer and competitor know how much effort people put in to prepare for a competition and how heartbreaking and discouraging can be to some when things like this happen. And one now wonders why people no longer want to compete in L.A once the Mecca of Salsa.

Hello Milton, (PART 2)

You as a former performer and competitor know how much effort people put in to prepare for a competition and how heartbreaking and discouraging can be to some when things like this happen. And one now wonders why people no longer want to compete in L.A once the Mecca of Salsa.

Now if you ask me about the “re-match”, to me it’s just another marketing opportunity to once again gather people and somehow try to justify and try to correct the mistake done. I have a better idea, why don’t they just give Crisitian the money? first of all He’s NOT going to lose on the rematch , it’s just a way to justify and compensate him for what was his to begin with. And second, the guy won the competition fair and square there is nothing he needs to defend, why make him work twice? (Let me go on record and say that I’m not his fan, but what’s right is right)

Instead I would like to hear the owners, promoters or the judges or SOMEONE to step up and publicly admit they were wrong and apologize to the contestants and to the public, after all everyone paid a fee to go and see a clean and fair competition and were there to support their favorite dancers, that perhaps will be the start to once again earn the peoples respect and support. The problem nowadays is that none one wants to step up and admit they were WRONG, no one wants to show their face and take responsibility, therefore the outrage of the people.

Just to give an example, when a pot hole needs to be repaired and your car gets damaged you don’t go and just blame the workers on the street for not doing a good job, you go and make a claim to the people in charge and to the city hall if necessary. Same principle applies here. Some needs to take RESPONSIBILITY.

Once Again people, this is just my personal point of view, some of you may or may not agree but in this case it was a lose/ lose situation.

It’s bad for the people that were robbed from their winnings, as well as for the people that won and now have to live with the public opinion knowing that they won because of bad judges.

Someone out there said, I’d rather have the people’s love and support than a trophy that I know I didn’t win fairly.

Above all, Good Job to all competitors.

We respect all views and opinions on SalsaHook.com, Brenda. -- Salsa dance competitions, by their own nature, will never ever please everyone in a crowd, no matter the outcome. In sports (soccer, baseball, football, basketball, etc), a team scores their own points and that's how it can easily be determined who won and who lost. Even though referees are often blamed for outcomes of scores as well (once again, people are never happy). In Salsa dance or any type of dance or artistic competition, someone else is doing YOUR scoring for you...which becomes subjective to who the person judging is and what they think of you. It sucks, but it is how it is.

Now, this is a SOLO COMPETITION...which can be best compared to solo sports, such as tennis, swimming, running, cycling, etc., but still...your scoring is done by third parties who can often not dance as well as you, or can't comprehend body movements that they have never achieved with their own bodies, etc.

If we dare to believe that a venue has a hand in who wins or loses a competition simply because of who works for them, gives them better prices for services, etc, then all faith is lost. This is why venues post the scores of the competition with the competitors names and the judges names when the winners are announced. Otherwise, venues become suspect to scrutiny and conspiracy theories can start. Not putting the scores up is truly a bad thing for any venue...and this is why the Mayan began doing this a long time ago and other venues have followed. It creates accountability.

In the past, when scores were not posted, judges were also in disbelief of pronounced winners by the MC of the night or the owner of the venue. They would talk among each other and realize that none of the people they had placing at the top were actually at the top, which led to a lot of controversy since it was evident that the winners were CHOSEN by the venue (usually a person who taught classes there, a friend of the owner, or relatives of the promoters...for example).

Anyway, please do know that I know Cristian for years and along with you, I also wish he had been chosen the winner. But I do not think blaming the venue is proper in this case.
