Change Your LocationSunday Nights Keeping San Diego Hot this Winter
Written by Randy Kish
Sunday, the seventh day, a day for rest? San Diegans must be impatient. Seriously, who wants to go out after an action-packed Friday and Saturday night, followed by football, church and family time? Apparently this addiction to Salsa so many embrace crosses all boundaries. There is no need to drive hours to the infamous Sunday night festivities at Steven's Steakhouse to get a fix, as San Diego now offers not just one, but three alternatives for dancing on Sunday nights.
Longstanding options include Queen Bee in North Park, resurgent from its days as Hot Monkey Love. Hosted by Alma Rodriguez and Michael Saltus, Queen Bee features music by local favorite Iran "DJ Mambo" Castillo, a pristine large dance floor, and a fluorescent bachata room. As an all ages club, Queen Bee attracts students from SDSU, which bolsters the lesson attendance and provides a consistently flow of new faces. The floor quality, music and "team night" cover charge attracts many local dancers as well.
For those who live further north, Rumba Entertainment has Ocean House Salsa Sundays in Carlsbad. The venue's Victorian architecture provides a warm and festive atmosphere during the holidays and a spacious ballroom that allows for occasional live bands and plenty of floor space. As the only weekly club in North County, Ocean House is consistently packed with regulars and who opt not to make the drive into town after a long weekend.
New to the Sunday lineup is “Bachata Sundays” at Prospect Bar & Grill in La Jolla. Catering to a quickly growing crowd of bachata enthusiasts, tropical sounds from the Dominican Republic will fill the air starting November 20th. Oddy "DJ Tumbao" Pena will spin a mix of bachata, merengue, reggaton, and a bit of salsa. Hopes are high that this new club by Rumba Entertainment will bring San Diego's underground bachata scene to the forefront by giving bachateros a night catering to them as well as attract new people to the scene. Its free entry for those who arrive before the 9PM lesson.
In any case, forget the idea of staying in on Sunday to rest. With all of these options this night will surely spark the start of the salsa weekly calendar this winter. Besides you can always rest when you're dead.
