BELASCO THURSDAY SALSA NIGHT — So, last night was my first time at the Belasco nightclub in Downtown Los Angeles. Right off the top, driving up to Hill St. made me feel as if I was going to the Mayan on a Thursday night, which didn't feel right. But as soon as you park and get there, you KNOW this place is happening and it is sure to be a good time!
There was a line outside for people wanting to get in. As you get in, you start realizing what a classic type of building this really is. It is completely restored and has state of the art sound, lighting systems, and just a great and classy environment that you won't find anywhere else in LA. There is truly no comparison to the Mayan next door...which is an ancient venue that has capitalized for years without any competition in the area...but not no more!
DJ Zonik plays the best musical selection between Salsa and Bachata all night long, and the quality of dancers inside the club is excellent! You could go all night long without stopping because you don't want to miss any of the great songs being played! This is a "salsa lover's heaven" if you truly indulge into the music, the atmosphere, the dancing, and just the hype and joy that can be felt in the room.

I must say, Linda Ayentes, the instructor at the venue is an excellent dancer (duh, that's why she teaches there, right?) and I had the opportunity to enjoy one song with her, and you can tell her level is superior. She has this left shoulder move that I really liked and I asked her to please teach it to all the girls in LA. If she reads this article, she'll remember...hehe. I just think it is very unique, sexy, and would make girls in LA look cute when dancing.
So, the night went on and I could not stop dancing, until the live Salsa show started. Yes, DJ Zonik has done everything in his power to make sure this is truly a great experience for all attending. From what I understand, shows are regular at the venue and are truly a treat!
After midnight or at around 1 AM, you can expect a veriety of music ranging from Bachata, to Reggaeton, to Punta, to Hip Hop, to top 40's, etc. This is a great time to chill and have some fun being crazy on the floor and a reminder that maybe you're passed your bedtime. I know I was!
One last thing I must mention, the drinks...yum! Any great venue would not be considered great did it not serve good drinks. So, do not miss the bar when you go in...I highly recommend it! Very reasonable prices and great tasting stuff!
All in all, the Belasco has a great future and I am very happy that DJ Zonik is the one promoting this night. He has ingenuity like very few people in Salsa have, which is notable by his Tropical Rhythm stint in 2008, 2009, 2010, in which he clearly demonstrated that if he wanted to...he could have the best choreographed dance team in LA, which he did have.
DJ Zonik speaks of concerts at the venue, which can hold thousands of people in the main ballroom (don't know an exact capacity number), and of World Salsa Dance Competitions, which will surely revive the Salsa scene in LA once again! Maybe there'll also be Bachata competitions? We'll see.
But one thing is for sure: Belasco Thursdays is here to stay! Best of luck to everything you plan Zonik! Keep it up! SalsaHook.com will be here to help and contribute in any way. We'd love to be considered a "sponsor" for your events and future plans! Keep SalsaHook.com in mind!
(Oh, guys...don't miss the bacon-wrapped hot dogs on your way out...hmmmm...lots of onions and the greasier the better, please!)
