Written by Milton Rodas
LOS ANGELES SALSA — There are many names that come up as possible contributors of what L.A. Style Salsa has become in the past decade or so, but when it comes to giving credit to a sole originator of the style, that person has and will always be: Francisco Vazquez.
Francisco Vazquez is considered by many as the greatest salsa dancer in the world. A complete innovator, a visionary, and someone who in the 90s single-handedly promoted a flashy, dynamic, showy style of salsa dancing that featured fast-paced footwork and strong accents to the music: L.A. Style Salsa.
He is the founder, choreographer, and principal dancer of the world acclaimed dance troupe "Los Rumberos," which has been consistently in the top 5 salsa dance teams in the world. Los Rumberos has laid the foundation to many of the greats in salsa, such as Luis and Johnny Vazquez (Francisco's younger brothers), and many other dancers in Los Angeles and in Europe.
It can easily be said that Francisco's L.A. Style lineage of dancing reaches every salsa dancer, instructor, choreographer, or performer in Los Angeles, and many other parts of the US and the world.
Francisco has mastered Latin dance rhythms such as Salsa, Mambo, Bachata, Afro-Cuban, Merengue, Cumbia, Cha Cha Cha, Latin American Dance techniques, Rumba, Guaganco, Guaracha, Charanga, Pachanga, Mexican Folkloric & Indigenous dances. He is well known for, very effectively, mixing different styles in his dance performances and social dance style, which attracts and captivates the world of salsa anywhere he makes appearances at.
Amongst his career-long numerous accomplishments, Francisco has appeared in many films, such as "Selena," "Dance With Me," and "Multiplicity," amongst others. He has been a principal dancer for music video productions like Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting for Tonight," Mar Anthony's "I Need to Know," Selena's "A Boy Like That," and many others. And he has appeared in television shows like "Sabado Gigante," and won numerous world salsa championships at the Conga Room and Mayan Nightclub in Los Angeles.
Francisco has also performed on-stage with many of Latin music's greats, such as Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Ruben Blades, and Gilberto Santa Rosa, amongst many others.
Francisco has traveled the world dancing, performing, and teaching his unique L.A. Style and bringing his charisma to stages that welcome him as his home, and cannot get enough of him. He is sought after by event organizers and promoters in all continents and all major cities in the world.
SalsaHook.com is privileged to even have the opportunity to write about the one and only, the great Francisco Vazquez, and we wish him the best in all his endeavors.
