Change Your Location'Single Ladies' Girls choreography by Precision Dance: Inappropriate?
Written by Milton Rodas
As a dance community, we ought to pay close attention to the current issue being brought up by the media and so many other outlets, where five young girls ages 7-9 performed an overly sexualized dance routine at the 2010 World of Dance Tour Competition in Pomona, CA. The girls were wearing midriff-baring tops, short skirts and black stockings with a little red bow on them (I've seen those stockings being sold on Hollywood Blvd at stores I won't mention). The dance troupe, called Precision Dance from Orange County, certainly showcased a very well-performed dance routine with outstanding dance technique given the girls' ages, but were some of the moves and certainly the costumes really necessary?
The reason this immediately intrigued me is because it reminded me of a Salsa routine performed on-stage by Alex Da Silva, 40+ years old (choreographer of "So You Think You Can Dance?," who is now in jail on charges of multiple rapes), with a 12 year-old girl (not his daughter), where the girl did a hand stand in front of him, wrapped her legs around his hip area (crotch), and he proceeded to simulate playing the 'congas' with her butt-cheeks as she shook in front of him.
After that Salsa routine was performed on-stage a couple of years ago, there was a lot of talk of how inappropriate it was (by me, mostly) and I was amazed at how many people actually came forth defending the dance as 'just a dance' (including the little girl's father, who justified that it was a way for his daughter to break-thru in the world of dance...oh gosh!). So, certainly, now that this 'Single Ladies' video has surfaced and even news chains like CNN are talking about it with Dr. Phil waging in and stating how inappropriate it is, this is something that we ought to think about as a dance community and start deciding what we want to see from kids in our dance scene.

Needless to say, there have been numerous people in our dance community (including some of the kids' parents) who have come out saying that those who see these children doing anything wrong are 'the problem' and that they are just kids in a dance competition showcasing their talents. In my opinion, this is very sad.

Roberta KhalilFri, May 14, 2010, 01:33 PMIn many ways DANCE is a tool, it can be used to express feelings, show creativity and in this case evaluate where our society is.We can do this by: 1. listening to the music; what does the artist sing about? 2. what are the dancers wearing? 3. how are they dancing? Now if you were to answer these questions and give the results to someone else, I'm pretty sure that they would not guess the age of the dancers but they would agree that it is common to hear about single women wearing bikini like tops with short shorts making sexual movements while dancing. In the interview with Dr. Phil he asked a valid question "where do they go from here?" I thought about the same thing when i saw this video and consider it fair to come up with the assumption that because they performed this dance it tells them that it is ok and that people like it and that they should continue to deepen themselves the creative process on improving those moves showing them off and coming up with even more shocking moves to stay on top of any competition. I can continue to be more specific with where they might go from there with statics provided by this link http://www.sadd.org/stats.htm which I suggest for you to look at for yourself to come up with your own answers to the question if this choreography is appropriate. In conclusion all I can say is: Yes, Milton, this is sad. |

Dance momWed, Aug 24, 2011, 04:49 PMI am a dance mom and I have to say this routine made me sick to my stomach. All the adults involved should have a visit from child protection services. What is particularly disgusting is that these girls are talented. They have great flexibility, timing, jumps, and spins. That is what takes training. Ayone can thrust their hips back and forth, shake their booty and slap themselves on the behind. That isn't dance and it isn't necessary in a routine, especially one by 7/9 year olds!… Read More I am a dance mom and I have to say this routine made me sick to my stomach. That isn't dance and it isn't necessary in a routine, especially one by 7/9 year olds! Showcasing their talents in spins, turns and leaps could help them get to Broadway some day. Hip thrusts and gyrations??? Maybe a stripper pole? What really happened here is an abuse by their dance instructor and choreographer and an absolute lack of parenting by moms and dads! |
