Frances Nieves: LA is Dancing On2

LOS ANGELES, CA — In the recent months, Los Angeles has been hit by the buzz that tells us that somehow "LA is dancing On2" nowadays, and while at the beginning such were strange news in our city, the buzz has now started to become a part of the mainstream LA Salsa scene. Surely, more and more dancers are demonstrating an interest in this "On2" thing that for years, and since the Seaon Stylist days, had not interested enough individuals to become relevant in a city like LA, where On1 is king. But now, a new face has come to town, with a new attitude about the dance, the art, and the style, and is trying to bring people together to get LA to start dancing On2 more and more. Her name is Frances Nieves. 

 

Frances Nieves was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and has been living and dancing in the states a little less than 6 years, and has already made a big name for herself. During the course of her professional career she has danced and done choreography for many Latin mega-stars, such as Don Omar, Daddy Yankee, Victor Manuelle, and Olga Tañon, to name just a few. Frances has also worked as principal dancer, choreographer, and model for global brands like Cheetos, Sobe, Nike, Bud Light, Ed Hardy and Arcor in Germany. 

 

In 2008, Frances danced with Jerry Rice, who appeared as 1st finalist in the popular television show, "Dancing with the Stars," for an Elations Health Drinks promotional campaign. And amongst her many other accomplishments, Frances has also worked as an assistant choreographer for Cirque du Soleil with Jhesus Aponte; she was an assistant choreographer to Andy Blankenbuehler in the Broadway musical production, "In The Heights"; and also danced and did choreography with Jamal Sims for the movie "Step Up 2." And lastly, Frances is also part of "The Waackers" dance crew, directed by Kumari Suraj.

"LA is Dancing On2": The Movement

With an approach that promotes unity amongst on2 dancers, Frances Nieves, along with her dance partner Beto Rojas, has created the "LA is Dancing On2" movement that is appealing to all sorts of dancers from Los Angeles. Suddenly, dancing On2 has become 'cool' in LA and hopefully it will continue to be perceived in that manner. Perhaps this time around, the buzz will not die and the style will stick! 

Los Angeles, a city known for its strong On1 dancing style (LA Style Salsa), has, for years, refused to give in to the On2 style that was promoted by many previous On2 professional dancers and dance troupes that attempted to inject the style into the city, but failed. The resistance was largely due to the type of polarizing approach presented by those that promoted it, where it almost felt as if you had to join a 'cliquish' group to be cool with what 'On2' represented. So many comments that were based around the idea of "On1 being an inferior dance and those dancing it were inferior dancers" did not serve well in the purpose of 'promoting' the On2 style to dancers in Los Angeles.

The new approach by Frances and Beto with their "LA is Dancing On2" movement is not judgmental or polarizing, but rather welcoming, friendly, and sounds like fun! Just like the saying that goes: "people that like people are people that people like," a friendly and respectful approach to the already established On1 Style in LA has given path to the fruitful growth of what Frances and Beto are doing! This is what was missing in LA and the missing link was Frances Nieves!
