The Republic of Haiti is a Caribbean country that occupies the island of Hispaniola, along with the Dominican Republic, in the Greater Antillean archipelago. The people of Haiti are accustomed to natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and such. In 2004, tropical storm Jeanne hit the north coast of Haiti, leaving 3, 006 people dead in flooding and mudslides. In 2008, Haiti was hit again by four big tropical storms and casualties were hard to count due to lack of resources as mudslides and poor soil conditions devastated the country and its economy.
All in all, Haitian people are no stranger to disasters that devastate and leave a lot of pain and suffering behind, and with high poverty levels and cost of living, it seems they are forced to accept all that comes their way.
This January 2010, Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake, which was the country's most severe earthquake in over 200 years, and which has left an estimated death toll of over 200,000. With widespread damage resulting from the earthquake and the capital city completely devastated, as many as one million Haitians were left homeless. News of the catastrophe traveled quickly and people from all over the world began to do anything they could to help Haiti in any way possible.
In our Salsa community, and dance communities in general, a great number of events began to surface promoting aid to the devastated country. The purpose and goal has been to raise funds for humanitarian aid to the Republic of Haiti, by means of direct donations to organizations already providing relief to the people of Haiti and the country as a whole. One after another, event promotions began to surface all over the place by means of Facebook, MySpace, Email Marketing, and regular flyer promotion or word of mouth. And it is so satisfying to realize that people answered the call for help and have gone out to dance to provide hope to all the Haitian people in need!
As of today, I have personally attended quite a few of these events and some of them have been put together very nicely! People donating their talents for live dance and musical performances have upgraded the value of many events and hopefully have succeeded in fund raising money that will go directly to the Haitian people.
This is a great testimony to our values as a dance community, and to the hearts of our people, even as we have also been hit by a financial crisis that seems to have hurt way too many people. But nothing can compare to the pain and suffering of a country that sees death and complete devastation everywhere it turns to. Let us continue helping the country and be proud of whatever we can do to provide any sort of relief to all the Haitian people in need.
