Guys, Be "The Man" in Salsa!

Guys, Be

If you are driving a vehicle with passengers and you get into an accident, it is your fault, even if the person to your side was distracting you. You are the person at the wheel and you should have kept your eyes on the road. But it would naturally be easier to blame someone else for your driving error, right?

Well, in Salsa, if you are leading a lady in a dance and she's getting hit from every direction, even if she is a beginner and a bit rough to handle, guess whose fault it is? Yes, yours. Likewise, if you pull a move on a lady and she cannot follow it, even if she has noodle arms or fingers, is over-extending, or is a beginner in dance, guess whose fault it is that she could not do that move? Yes, yours!

Something we (guys) know that women don't experience in Salsa dancing is the pain and suffering of learning how to effectively lead. Some guys get to a very high and smooth level of dancing and others lag behind and/or are complacent with what they have achieved so far. It is every person's choice what level of dancing they want to accomplish. But in Salsa, it is always a man's responsibility to effectively lead the lady, protect her, make her feel good, and show her off, if possible.

If you can take this attitude of responsibility about your dancing and you can push yourself to see every flaw or mistake as your own, you will become a better dancer in the long-run. Better than all the other guys on the floor, even if they have more moves or seem more fluid in body movement. If people step on you or on your lady, or you and her are stepping on other people, it is YOUR fault that this is happening. Yes, I know that sometimes people around you are just rude and careless, but if you know this, defensive dancing is the best strategy. And if you understand this and do not put it into practice, then it is your fault. You may have to not do so many moves, dance more calmly, and be more careful of your surroundings in defensive dancing, but if that is what you have to do so that you can be 'the man' to the lady you are dancing with, then just do it! Be the man, the better dancer, and stop looking at the lady you are dancing with as the reason for all your short-comings!

Disclaimer: this topic was directed only to those men who really care to learn how to dance in a way that is truly appreciated by the ladies they dance with. (Even if such women never acknowledge it)
