The 1st Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Bachata Bash at Stevens Steak House was a true success in many levels; the venue was a packed house, the music and dancing were truly enjoyable, the crowd was lively and happy, and the entertainment and dance shows were truly phenomenal. The event attracted people who may not seem as regulars to what is commonly perceived as "Stevens Steak House" type of attendees, but these individuals were not there for the Salsa, they were there for the
Bachata! Such is a true testimony to the awakening of the
Bachata Scene in Los Angeles! SalsaHook.com congratulates all the organizers of the event and wishes them continued success during their regular Wednesday Bachata Nights!
The night started with Bachata lessons from 7:45 - 9:30 pm by Jorge Contreras, director of Bachata Caliente Dance Company. This was a great opportunity for people to not only learn the basic steps and motions of Bachata, but to get acquainted with other new dancers who were there trying to pick up their skills. This is important to give attendees confidence in dancing with others when the DJ music starts and the dancing begins later on in the night. Many times people are too shy or afraid of asking others to dance, especially when the dance can bring both dancers as close to each other as Bachata's objective is. So meeting people that you could be dancing with later on at a dance class can surely be a confidence booster.
After that, the music and dancing began with tunes by DJ Vince, who is also another Bachata pioneer dancer in the Los Angeles area. The rule seemed to be that every 3 Bachata songs, there would be 1 Salsa song played for the Salsa lovers who happened to be there and could need a small salsa fix (like me ;-P). The music roles in the DJ's picks were reversed and that was refreshing to observe - this is truly a Bachata scene here in Los Angeles!

Later in the night, DJ Martin "El Travieso" took over and as more people continued to arrive, the place seemed to be the liveliest that it has been in many years! DJ Martin's tunes made everyone want to dance, which resulted in a dance floor that was a bit crowded at times. But that was a good problem to have - it simply meant that the night was truly happening! From his Bachata, to Salsa, to even Hip Hop and Reggaeton musical selections (yes, they played some Hip Hop and Reggaeton a few times in the night), DJ Martin had all the club-goers wanting to dance every single song! It felt as if it was a Friday or Saturday night at a downtown L.A. trendy club with a Latin fusion of music - it was truly great!
Then at around midnight, the dance floor was cleared for the dance shows of the night. Acts like "Los Traviesos," "Salsabor y Cache," "Bachata Caliente," "Tropical Rhythm," "MG Dance Studio," and "Alberto and Tatiana" (from the TV Show "Tengo Talento Mucho Talento") were very successful in entertaining the crowd and giving value to the night. People surrounded the main dance floor to watch so many great shows that ranged from rhythms of Bachata, to Guaracha, to Salsa, to Cumbia Tejana, and received all the dancers with warm applause and enthusiasm.
The night evolved and the dancing continued until 2 am. There were even some sections of the night when about three to four salsa songs were played in a row. Oh that was so needed and it was great that DJ Martin understood that about the crowd.
Everyone should try to attend the rugular Stevens Steak House Bachata Wednesdays, which have Bachata Lessons by Jorge Contreras and Salsa Lessons by Miguel Aguirre from 7-9 pm, and is a night with NO COVER CHARGE all night long. SalsaHook.com will try to be there next time and be able to tell all our readers the scoop of the events at Stevens!
