Angel Lebrón has quickly become a very popular name in the Los Angeles Salsa Scene. With a 14-piece band, sincere passion and commitment to Salsa, and a repertoire of great sounding music, it did not take long for dancers, venue owners, and promoters to fall in love with what Angel Lebrón was bringing to the table.
In April of 2007, Angel Lebrón created his own band, Angel Lebrón y Su Sabor Latino, and its popularity rapidly spread across Los Angeles and he was soon considered one of the town’s top names in Salsa music. With complete support and motivation from his family, Angel formed the band to do what he does best, direct great music.
This was an opportunity for Angel to introduce a return to the Latin Big Band sound that he loves so much, reclaiming the classic street salsa sound of New York City streets, in which he grew up, and which gave him the opportunity to witness 'pure salsa' as a child. With their Palladium Style, audiences constantly feel taken back to the 1960s and 70s.
Today, Angel continues to dedicate his appearances to his musical fathers and the musicians of the NYC Palladium Era. In 2008, Angel Lebro Y Su Sabor Latino began recording. The Los Angeles Salsa Scene will soon be given new musical flavors to dance and celebrate to.
Who is Angel Lebrón?
Born on the day of the dead, November 2, in New York City into a Puerto Rican family of professional musicians where Angel's Latin music and art roots are embedded within his blood. His Grandfather, Antonio "El Mosquito" Camacho, was a background singer for the Palladium Mambo King "Machito" and Angel's father,Luis Lebron, was well-known for his excellence within the romantic trios played withEl Trio de Johnny Rodriguez, (brother to another Palladium King, Tito Rodriguez),El Trio San Juan, Daniel Santos and many more.
Raised within the true and pure sound of Latin Big Band music, Angel began to learn another sound in the streets of New York City. The sound was El Tambor and it penetrated Angel's soul as he was able to feel its rhythms as if he always them. As Angel learned the rhythms of the Conga at an early age, he was granted the opportunity to participate in many South Bronx Street Jams and Battles, where he met other great Congeros, which we know today. They all came from the same barrios (neighborhoods).
After returning from Vietnam in 1968, Angel continued to embrace his love for Latin Rhythms, which took him to meet Babatunde Olatunji of Nigeria, a Master Drummer of all African Drummers, and the originator of Jingo, which Carlos Santana made so popular. Angel was later accepted as a student and mentored by Chief Bey (lead percussionist for the famous Alvin Ailey Harlem Dance Theatre), which got him to become a part of the group "Drums of Passion." Angel then used his Latin street influence with the disciplined sound of Olatunji, blending his own patterns and technique.
In 1970, Angel joined Johnny Colon and his Latin Jazz Sextet, and had the opportunity to meet and get to know many Latin greats, such as Joe Bataan, Jose Febles, Willie Colon, Frankie Dante, Joey Pastrana, Milton Cordona, Nicky Marrero, The TNT Band, and many more. Angel also later worked with La India,Inakaina, and Los Hermanos Colon.
After 30 years with a family and new generation of future Lebron Musicians, Angel Lebron moved his sound to his new home - Los Angeles, California. Having to prove himself, Angel low-keyed and played the "new kid" in town. But it did not take too long before he auditioned for the Swing Big Band "Noah's Ark", and he went on to join the Elliot Newmann Jazz Ensemble, The Dubin Collective (featured in 2 CDs), Jeannie Holiday R&B Revue, Second Faze, Toledo, De La Funk, The Martin Dancers and Rocky Padilla. Consequently, Angel gained the opportunity to play all over Southern California.
That carried on until April of 2007, when Angel gave birth to his own band and which gives path to this look at his trajectory. We at SalsaHook wish you the best always, Angel!
